This is a much less routine procedure in helicopters than in fixed-wing aircraft and was even less so with air force versions of the H-53, for reasons that are addressed in detail in Appendix B. Suffice it to say at this point that helicopters are extremely complex machines, as difficult to maintain as to fly. Before Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind, I had been responsible for performing the check flights on the last 40th aircraft brought into commission before deploymentone flight control rigging check done at night before Frequent Wind was particularly memorableand had flown each of the aircraft in question in the ensuing operation.

In addition, the 56th SOW was reducing personnel strength in anticipation of base closure within a year,21 which caused shortfalls and turbulence in manpower. By contrast, the 40th was high on the Rescue Service's list of priorities, and maintenance was fully manned. The advantages of fewer layers of bureaucracy and more manpower were apparent. 22 Experienced helicopter maintenance personnel of my acquaintance considered wing-level maintenance less satisfactory than organic squadron maintenance.

Decisions had emerged from a series of modifications, reinforcements, and vetoes that made little individual imprint on the conscious mind and were quickly forgotten. I came away from the experience with two lessons: first, my understanding of the way in which a well-trained helicopter crewand by extension any well-trained, closely knit crew operating complex machineryfunctions under the stress of combat had changed materially. Second, and more important to the purpose at hand, I had become keenly aware of just how perishable the memory of combat is.
